Professor Breda Smyth, MD, MPH, FFPHMI, is Professor of Public Health Medicine in Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, formerly the Chief Medical Officer to the Government of Ireland during the pandemic. Professor Smyth trained in medicine at University College Galway and completed specialist training with the Royal College of Physicians Ireland. A leader in Irish public health, she played key roles during COVID-19, including the Irish Governments National Public Health Emergency Team and a founding member of the Irish Epidemiological Modelling Expert Advisory Group. Professor Smyth has also led major initiatives in health reform, ageing policy, stroke prevention, and atrial fibrillation screening.
