Professor Breda Smyth, MD, MPH, FFPHMI, trained in medicine at University College Galway and completed specialist training with the Royal College of Physicians Ireland. A leader in Irish public health, she served as Chief Medical Officer (2022–2024) and previously as Director of Public Health with HSE West and Professor at NUI Galway. She played key roles during COVID-19, including with the Irish Governments National Public Health Emergency Team, and has led major initiatives in health reform, ageing policy, stroke prevention, and atrial fibrillation screening.
