Tackling AMR: the critical role of vaccines and health surveillance systems

This panel discussion, co-designed by VaxHub Sustainable and VaxHub Global and the UCL Policy Impact Unit, will bring together experts from across academia and policy to explore and raise awareness of the role of vaccines in preventing and mitigating AMR. Vaccines are one of the most effective ways of preventing infections in both humans and animals, which in turn reduce the need for antimicrobials. Despite their key role, vaccines remain an underappreciated tool for tackling AMR.

Health surveillance systems can act as critical enablers in enhancing the role of vaccines in AMR by evidencing the preventative role of new and established vaccines and selecting appropriate pathogens for vaccine development. This discussion will create the space to share actionable solutions in the context of the need to support the strengthening of national AMR surveillance systems as part of national health surveillance systems in order to more effectively harness the potential of vaccines to address AMR.

The expected outcomes encompass raising awareness about the crucial role vaccines play in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and examining how health surveillance systems act as key enablers in maximizing this role. The event will highlight successful experiences with digital tools used to address AMR and propose practical solutions to enhance health surveillance systems in support of vaccine efforts. Furthermore, a written summary reflecting insights from the panel discussion will be developed, accompanied by post-event communications including news articles and social media content to extend the reach and impact of the discussion.
